How to Colorize Black and White Photos With AI
Written by Mordechai Peretz · Updated: October 7, 2026 · 5 min read
To colorize a black-and-white photo, upload a scan or a phone picture of it to an AI colorizer. In NeedPS you choose Restore old photo: the app adds natural color to skin, clothing, sky and background, repairs scratches and fading in the same pass, and is built to keep every face recognizable. Black-and-white photos always come back in full color.
One thing to know before you start: AI colors are an educated estimate, not a record. The model infers likely colors from what it sees, so a dress that was really green may come back blue. Below: how to get natural skin tones, and what to do when you know the real colors.
How to colorize a photo, step by step
- 1
Capture the black-and-white photo
Use a scan, or photograph the print from directly above in soft daylight, without flash.
- 2
Upload it and choose Restore old photo
The app recognizes what is in the photo and adds color automatically. There is no palette to pick.
- 3
Check the result
Look at skin, clothing and background, then zoom in on the faces. Ready to share with the family or print.
Why skin tones go wrong, and what helps
Skin is where colorizers fail most often: it comes out orange, grey or uniformly tanned. A faded or blue-tinted print makes it worse, because the tint is easily mistaken for real color.
The NeedPS restore tool is set up to keep each person's natural skin tone rather than darken or tan it, and to read eye color from how dark the eyes are instead of from the photo's color cast. That avoids a common giveaway of AI colorization: dark eyes turned light blue.
Faded, scratched and black-and-white at once?
No problem. The Restore old photo tool treats it all in one pass: it repairs scratches, creases and tears, removes fading and yellowing, sharpens detail and adds color, while working to keep each face true to the person, including in group photos.
When you know the real colors
If someone in the family remembers that the car was red or the uniform was navy, you do not have to accept the estimate. Take the colorized photo into General change and type the correction, such as "make the car dark red". The change is aimed at that one item, and the rest of the photo is meant to stay as it was.
Frequently asked questions
How do I colorize a black and white photo for free?
Upload the photo to NeedPS and choose Restore old photo. The app adds natural color to skin, clothing and background and repairs damage in the same pass. You get free edits to start, and they work on every tool.
Are AI-colorized photos historically accurate?
Not exactly. The colors are an estimate based on what is in the photo, such as skin, sky, foliage and fabric. They look natural, but they are not a record of the original colors. If you know a real color, correct it with General change.
Can I colorize a photo without repairing it?
The Restore old photo tool colorizes and repairs together. On a photo in good condition there is little damage to fix, so the main change you will see is the color and sharper detail.
Will the faces change when the photo is colorized?
The tool is built to keep each face recognizable as the same person. AI results can vary, so zoom in on the faces and run it again if one looks different.
Can I colorize photos on my phone?
Yes. NeedPS is an app for iPhone and Android, and the whole process happens on your phone.
